Derek Johnson, CFA

As Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director – Worldwide Services of Aurora WDC, Mr. Johnson spends most of his time guiding the overall strategy of the business and directing the firm’s external consulting opportunities with clients. Prior to this promotion in March 2010, he served the prior seven years as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Research with the firm. Prior to joining Aurora in 2003, Mr. Johnson was in the Investment Management industry as an account and portfolio manager. He served as Wisconsin’s SCIP chapter co-chair from 2007-2009 and remains on the steering committee, was Program Chair of the 2009 SCIP International Conference, and is a SCIP Catalyst Award recipient.

Arik Johnson

Arik Johnson is Chairman of Aurora WDC, the intelligence research, systems and training consultancy he founded in 1995. After stepping aside as CEO in late 2009, today Arik serves as Managing Director and lead architect at Aurora’s R&D lab, think tank and intelligence policy institute, the Center for Organizational Reconnaissance (RECONVERGE.net). Arik directs hypothesis development on seemingly intractable intelligence problems and works with organizations of all kinds to develop a performance-driven organizational reconnaissance apparatus to monitor, detect, interpret and anticipate changes in the business environment that could help them outperform their peers.

John Thomson joined the company in early 2005 and has more than 17 years of experience in the field of corporate intelligence and counterintelligence. Based in Atlanta, his role as Chief Research Officer focuses on managing the field intelligence collection efforts of our research teams, with final decision-making capability on the composition of the research teams and the ongoing directives of their efforts. He also manages our network of overseas research partners. Based in Chicago, Heather is Aurora’s Director of Compliance & Quality where she works closely with clients and research teams directing engagements to ensure they are carried out in accordance with all relevant global laws, regulations, and company policies governing the application of intelligence. Heather also consults with Aurora’s CEO on issues pertaining to intellectual property and general corporate matters.

Prior to joining Aurora, Heather was a litigation attorney with a large Chicago-based law firm. She graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law and magna cum laude from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in biology and chemistry.

Michel Bernaiche

Director – Program Development

Michel Bernaiche utilizes his nearly 15 years of multi-industry experience as an intelligence practitioner to assist companies in building or enhancing the operational design, execution, and influence of their intelligence functions.

He currently serves on the Special Libraries Association Competitive Intelligence Division board as 2014 Chair Elect. He was also the 2012 Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Strategic & Competitive Intelligence Professionals. Additionally, Michel served as Interim CEO in 2012 during a recent leadership change at the Strategic & Competitive Intelligence Professionals. He holds an MBA in International Business from Suffolk University, a bachelor’s degree in finance from Northeastern University, and is a certified competitive intelligence professional through the Academy of Competitive Intelligence.

Michel is a frequent speaker on competitive intelligence topics at venues around the world and is a recipient a 2014 SCIP Fellows Award.

Richard P. Loomis

Director – Research Solutions

Richard has more than 18 years of competitive intelligence experience with a particular emphasis in the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries. This work has included overseeing investigations focused on generic pharmaceuticals, biosimilars, and specialty pharmaceuticals as well as branded biopharmaceuticals.

Although Richard’s competitive intelligence career history has been primarily as a consultant to corporate clients, he has also served as a corporate director of competitive intelligence with TransAmerica Occidental Life Insurance. Richard is the lead author on a number of syndicated market analysis studies and industry journal articles. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
